Global sales of chemicals more than quadrupled over the past two decades, driven in large part by emerging economies that accounted for more than 80 percent of new chemical production capacity.

Chemical sales inTürkiye have closely followed the global trend. Türkiye is an attractive investment location for chemical companies with its robust market growth fueled by end-user markets and its competitive production costs. Türkiye ranked as a 7th globally in FDI inflow over past decade.

Türkiye is becaming a regional production, management, and export hub for leading brands in the chemicals industry. Chemical giants such as BASF, Henkel, Bayer, Evonik, Air Liquide, SOCAR, Linde, Ravago, P&G, PPG, and Dow have been producing in Türkiye for decades and have continued to grow over the years.

The sustained growth in customer industries in Türkiye is also a source of strength. Türkiye is the largest commercial vehicle producer in Europe, the 12th largest automotive manufacturer in the world, the 10th largest agricultural producer in the world, and the largest textile producer in Europe, accounting for 4 percent of global exports.

As part of the urban transformation project in Türkiye, it is estimated that around 6.5 million residential units nationwide will be demolished and rebuilt over the next 20 years. Thus, Türkiye's construction industry, which is valued at USD 60 billion, is one of the fastest growing end-user markets for the chemicals industry in Türkiye.

Another promising area in Türkiye's chemicals industry is the plastics sector, which accounts for almost 3 percent of global plastics production.

The significant gap between the capacity and the consumption of petrochemical products offers ample opportunities for local and foreign investors. There are also lucrative opportunities in Türkiye's surroundings that investors can tap into by utilizing the country's strategic location and top-notch infrastructure.

Türkiye's remarkable rise in the defense and aviation sectors has created new opportunities in niche and high value-added areas within the chemical industry, such as composites, coatings, sustaianable fuels and specialty chemicals.

The combination of a growing economy, a large domestic market, advanced infrastructure, a skilled and competitive workforce, and investor-friendly legislation ensure that manufacturers in Türkiye's chemicals sector stand to reap long-term returns from investing in one of the most promising emerging nations in the world.

As one of the pioneers in the chemicals industry, for many years BASF has supplied chemical products for various industrial sectors and has contributed to the Turkish economy since the foundation of the republic. BASF operates six production facilities in Türkiye (Dilovası, Çayırova, Gebze, Trabzon, Adana, and has recently acquired the Chemetall Türkiye manufacturing site in Çayırova) and has offices in Istanbul, Adana, Ankara, Antalya, Bursa, and Izmir. Product sales fall under four main categories: industrial chemicals, functional products and solutions, performance products, and agricultural solutions. The company offers services to many key industries, including automotive, electric-electronics, construction, leather-textiles, detergents, cleaning, medical devices, cosmetics, animal feedstuff, agriculture, and food. BASF carries out its activities in Türkiye while adhering to the mission “We create chemistry for a sustainable future". As part of this mission, BASF signed a protocol in 2010 with the Ministry of National Education to renew chemistry laboratories of 81 high schools in 81 cities. This initiative became known as the “81 Chemistry Labs in 81 Cities" project. BASF also initiated a global education project called “Kids' Lab" to encourage children to take an interest in chemistry. Kid's Lab was rolled out in Türkiye in 2011 in three different shopping malls and is currently hosted in the Istanbul Modern museum. Kids' Lab was given the “Social Impact Practices" award by the Corporate Social Responsibility Association of Türkiye in 2012, and as of 2017 the project has touched the lives of over 14,000 children. A virtual game in Kids' Lab called Sanalika also recently took home the Gold Mixx award for the in-game integration category at the IAB Mixx Awards. BASF's renovated Dilovası Facilities Management Center building has been awarded the “Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold" certificate. Unilever, one of the oldest global corporations in the world, is a one-hundred percent publicly held company that operates in more than 190 countries. The company is one of the world's leading suppliers in the home care, personal care, and food and beverage categories, reaching 2.5 billion consumers everyday with its products. Attaching great importance to innovation, Unilever has been leading scientific research with an annual budget of approx. EUR 1 billion earmarked for R&D. This commitment to R&D allows Unilever to provide high-quality products to its consumers. Unilever's Sustainable Living Plan underpins the company's strategy and commits to helping more than a billion people take action to improve their health and well-being by 2020, halving the environmental footprint of the making and use of its products by 2030 as the company grows its business, and enhancing the livelihoods of millions of people by 2020 as the company grows its business. The Unilever Sustainable Living Plan creates value by driving growth and trust, eliminating costs, and reducing risks. The company's sustainable living brands are growing over 50 percent faster than the rest of the business and delivered more than 60 percent of the company's growth in 2016. Unilever was ranked number one in its sector in the 2016 Dow Jones Sustainability Index. In the FTSE4Good Index, it achieved the highest environmental score of 5. It also led the list of Global Corporate Sustainability Leaders in the 2016 GlobeScan/SustainAbility annual survey for the sixth year running. Unilever has pledged to become carbon positive in its operations by 2030. While it made its first investment in Türkiye in 1952 with the Sana factory established in Bakırköy, Istanbul, Unilever has been creating added value in Türkiye for more than 100 years with its products. Unilever's products in Türkiye include OMO, Rinso, Yumoş, Domestos, Cif, Sunlight, Elidor, Dove, Dove Men, Toni&Guy, Signal, Clear, Rexona, Lux, Axe, Sana, Lipton, Knorr, Calve, Becel, Algida, Carte d'Or, Cornetto, Magnum, Max, UFS, Hellmann's and Vaseline. After a EUR 95 million investment made for the Algida ice-cream factory in Konya, which started its operations in June 2013, the second investment in Konya was made for a home and personal care products factory in May 2017. Thus, Unilever has created a strong supply chain eco-system in Konya with its suppliers and has implemented the largest factory investment of the last decade in the Turkish FMCG sector with an integrated investment value reaching EUR 350 million in total. This is also the largest investment ever made in Konya across all sectors.
